Wales 30 - 3 England – Six Nations Final

Well done to Wales on their accomplished and emphatic defeat of England on Saturday . The game was dominated by the physicality of the Welsh forwards who simple out muscled the English pack. The brutal first half ended with a score of 9 – 3 to Wales with England conceding as many penalties in the first half as they did in the entire match against Italy.

The older and wiser Welsh players realised England were not committing bodies into the ruck and mauls and contested heavily in these areas, the more inexperienced English players conceded silly penalties which the Welsh capitalised on. Even the reliable boot of Own Farrell couldn’t lift English spirits as he missed two consecutive penalty kicks.

During the second half Wales upped their game and drove England back especially in the scrum. Two tries from Alex Cuthbert sealed England’s fate.  Even bringing on fresh players from the bench, England head coach Stuart Lancaster couldn’t turn the tide and change the outcome of the game.

On a personal note I think England are a very good team, but they spent too much time complaining to the referee during the game instead of just getting on with it, especially scrum half Ben Young who was critical of this. Mr Young needs to speed up and play the ball and run through the phases allowing the forwards and backs to do their job. The Welsh rush defence had England permanently on the back foot due to Ben Young’s slow delivery in the break down areas.

The Welsh thoroughly deserved the win; they were the better team on the day. I just hope England learn from the defeat, you have to turn up and get on with playing rugby rather than trying to tell the referee you’re not happy the opposition are playing a rough game.

Six Nations - Week One - Jeremy Lefton's predictions

It is that time of year that all rugby fans in the Northern Hemisphere look forward to more than any other - the Six Nations.

I don't think we'll see a Grand Slam this year. There are too many tough away fixtures for all teams and I believe that all teams will drop at least one game. The potential winners may be the team that wins four out of five and has the best points difference.

Momentum is a huge part of having a successful campaign so the opening weekend will be crucial - especially for Wales who host Ireland. If Ireland win then they will then have both England and France at home in Dublin. If Wales win, they go to Paris confident.

England will expect to beat Scotland at home before travelling to Dublin teh following week, which will prove a much tougher encounter.

France looked good in the autumn and should easily defeat Italy in Rome.

That is my first week of predictions, but the Six Nations often throws in a few surprises and the first week is always a good indication if any teams have under-prepared.

LinkedIn and Rugby - what a combination

I have recently joined this excellent group on LinkedIn - Rugby Business Network Group. It is an excellent source of information and also connects me with like minded business people who also have a passion for rugby (and business of course).

For those of you out there who share this enthusiasm for rugby and don't already participate, I would highly recommend it.

Shocked that Matt Stevens has Quit International Rugby

I’m shocked that Matt Stevens the England tighthead has retired from the international game.

Reading on the Planet Rugby, Matt has informed head coach Stuart Lancaster of his decision. I think it’s a real shame when an outstanding player like Stevens decides to leave the national side. He won 44 caps and appeared in two world cups but it would appear family commitments are at the heart of his decision to retire and this can be only applauded.

Looking forward to the World Cup in 2015 Matt felt he would not be able to commit to the team in the way he wanted, so he has made the difficult decision to step aside. This of course will be an immense opportunity for someone else. Matt Stevens I wish you well with the rest of your playing career at Saracens and thank you for playing for England.

Wishing Joe Ansbro a speedy recovery

I was very say to read London Irish and Scotland centre Joe Ansbro has suffered a broken neck, playing in a pre-season game against Munster. As I understand it, he has a stable fracture of the C1 vertebrae at the top of his spine and he has had a metal ‘halo’ inserted and will have to wear it for the next three months.

Rugby is a very physical game and Joe Ansbro was injured diving in for the ball and came of worse. Playing rugby you expect a few bumps and scrapes along the way but an injury like this is every rugby player’s worst nightmare.

Wishing Joe Ansbro a very speedy recovery and I hope to see him back playing Rugby soon.

Off Season Training Going Well

It’s hard at the moment to keep up the enthusiasm for training without any potential matches to aim for. When in between seasons it’s all too easy to relax and let fitness levels drop. I’ve been keeping my general fitness levels up with lots of running and cycling and then hitting a few sessions in the gym weight training. Maintaining your fitness levels is really important, as it helps to stop niggling injuries when the season starts again.

Here’s a quick video showing the strength of Tendai Mtawarira, now there’s a player who has spent a lot of time in the gym.
